Chapter Sixteen

The Order of Nimarius

David paused his story as he finally seemed to realize Percival had been standing in the same place, staring at him, for several minutes. The two Dunbars were winding their way into Bonnybield via alleys where they wouldn’t be seen, and were still many blocks from the Old Steeple. Percival gaped at David with narrowed eyes.

“You’re a Sorcerer?” Though he didn’t quite mean to, his tone sounded utterly skeptical.

David nodded. “The last of them.”

Percival gave an incredulous laugh and ran his hands through his shaggy hair. He’d felt a gripping chill when he realized he’d dreamed of Nimarius’s symbol the night before: the black unicorn. Yet another vision his Second Sight had granted him.

He faced David. “So that’s the supernatural war, then. You and this ‘Order,’ versus every other bellirolt in the world. A couple o’ humans against thousands o’ bellirolts. Perfect! We’re doomed.” He shoved his hands in his pockets and leaned against the nearest wall, just as his stomach gave a low rumble. He cringed. What he wouldn’t give for a steaming hot Forfar bridie from the bakery right then…

David seemed not to notice, and smiled. “You don’t yet know what a Knight of Nimarius is, Percival.”

“Oh, aye? You mean they’re not all old men and drunks? What were the others like?”

“Well, I wasn’t allowed to meet any more right away. That conclave Graven mentioned was only to reconnect with his surviving brothers. I was kept in seclusion to train for my knighthood: a ten-year process. I thought it would all be swordsmanship, levitating rocks as Graven did… as if magic were but a skill.”

David shook his head, his expression somewhat sheepish. “I couldn’t have been more wrong.”
